Dot Matrix: SOM1SOMEWHERE - Eye #2
Dot Matrix: SOM1SOMEWHERE - Eye #2
24 inch x 36 inch
These pieces start as an image that is edited into a bitmap, which is a pixelated approximation of the original. This image is then projected over a canvas and painted using different size dots using a spray can. This process is a macro version of the process that a printer uses to create images. The human eye will make this visual information into an image, and viewing it through a phone, digital camera, or at a distance intensifies the effect. The visual information on the canvas translated through the dots is most easily used to depict a face. This is because human beings are uniquely able to see faces due to evolution and biological factors. The effect of these pieces is bolstered not only by the dots, but also by the gaps in-between. This commingling of positive and negative space allows for visual depths that makes us see a person or facial feature. These paintings are intended to be stand-in’s for understanding how we see other people psychologically. The information we know about people is represented by the dots, these are the facts that we have learned about Som1, either through conversation or experience. The gaps between the dots represent the information you don’t know about Som1. Although this information is unknown, it’s an invisible factor that informs what you do know. We understand people by finding the common factors between what we know about them and what we don’t. These images are intended to represent how our understanding of Som1else isn’t just what we know about them, but also what we don’t.
