paintings according to the law of chance: These paintings are inspired by a German DADA artist named ‘Hans Richter’. His work covered a multitude of topics, but the one that inspired this work is titled “collage with squares arranged according to the laws of chance”. This piece was created by dropping scraps of paper onto a base sheet of paper, then gluing them in place. Following with the goals of Dadaist movement which had heavy ani-war sentiments, Hans attempts to show the randomness of the horrors of war though a simple paper collage. Som1 attempts to use the laws of chance to show a greater truth, that all things are random and bound by these laws. All things from a micro to macro level in our lives can be controlled to a certain percentage, but beyond that, we are subject to unknown circumstances. Unlike Hans, the goal of showing this randomness is to highlight the possibilities of thESE LAWS, NOT THE HORRORS. The Laws of Chance ensure that nothing can ever go according to plan, but viewing this as a negative is the only thing that bolsters a negative outcome. To depict this, Som1 paints whites lines on a black background to represent the mindsets and opinions we have as individuals. This layer represents the black and white way we all eventually come to see the world. Randomly arranged colorful paint is then whipped on the canvas without planning or intention. The paint is allowed to do as it will. this is intended to represent the laws of chance and their ability to break the rules we make in our head. The two layers of this painting come together to represent the unknown factors that play into our day, and allow for the most beautiful moments of it. Hidden in the laws of chance are both our worst fears and greatest achievements, THE ONLY CONSTANT OF WHICH is us as individuals. This work asks the question:
“should we fear the laws of chance? Or should we fear ourselves?”
